Frequently Asked Questions
Answers for navigating orthopaedic care in Ontario
Clear answers about referrals, imaging, surgeons, and getting care — with or without a family doctor.
Without a Family Doctor
Getting care without a family doctor
Can I see an orthopaedic surgeon in Ontario without a family doctor?
Yes. A referral is required to see an orthopaedic surgeon under OHIP, but it can come from any licensed physician or nurse practitioner — not only a family doctor. If you don't have one, we connect you with someone who can issue a valid referral. Orthopaedic Access prepares your referral details and handles the connection for you.
How do I get a referral without a family doctor in Ontario?
With roughly 2.5 million Ontarians currently without a family doctor, this is one of the most common situations we help with. We assemble your clinical history and imaging into a complete referral brief, then help you connect with a licensed physician who can issue the referral.

Imaging
MRI & X-ray coordination
Can you help me get an MRI in Ontario without a referral?
Most diagnostic imaging in Ontario requires a physician requisition. If you don't have one, we connect you with a licensed provider who can issue the requisition. We then help you identify suitable facilities — including OHIP-covered options many patients don't know about, as well as private clinics.
What's the difference between OHIP and private MRI in Ontario?
OHIP-covered MRI is free, but wait times vary widely by facility. Private-pay MRI in the GTA typically costs $500–$1,000+ per region and is usually available within days. We help you understand both options and identify the fastest appropriate path for your situation, including shorter-wait OHIP facilities you may not know exist.
Fracture Care
Fracture clinic access
I was discharged from the ER with a fracture — what do I do next?
Many people leave the emergency room with a fracture but no clear follow-up plan. Most Toronto hospital fracture clinics don't accept walk-ins — they require a referral. Orthopaedic Access helps you connect quickly to an appropriate fracture clinic or specialist and coordinate the imaging and referral needed so you're not navigating it alone.
What is a fracture clinic?
A fracture clinic is a specialized clinic that provides follow-up care for broken bones — monitoring healing, managing casts or braces, and determining whether surgery is needed. In Toronto, these clinics generally require a referral from an emergency department or walk-in clinic rather than accepting walk-ins directly. We help you navigate that referral pathway.
